Aeronautics Commission Awards $6,630 Aerospace & Aviation Education Grant to Thick Descriptions

OKLAHOMA CITY –  Twenty-five organizations were recently awarded Aerospace and Aviation Education Program grants or contracts totaling over $270,000 from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC). The record amount of funds will be used to expose more school-aged children in Oklahoma to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers, particularly those in aerospace and aviation.  The funding was approved by the Commission at their most recent meeting.

The Commission approved an education contract for Thick Descriptions STEAM in FLIGHT program held from the fall of 2017 through spring of 2018. The program applies to aviation/aerospace through a commitment to science.  Past attendees have expressed an interest to learn more about aviation and aerospace.  To support this interest, future camps are tailored to connect the natural sciences with engineering in ways that utilize Oklahoma’s unique resources while offering a fresh approach to kids specifically with a love for aviation. The program was estimated to serve 200 participants. The requested amount was $12,090 and the agency staff recommendation was $6,630.

“OAC is a new community partner with Thick Descriptions through the aviation education grant program, and we look forward to seeing the progress they achieve with their students,” said Catherine Taber, aviation program manager and aviation education coordinator for the Commission.
