Aeronautics Commission Awards $5,000 Aerospace & Aviation Education Grant to Daily Oklahoman’s Newspaper in Education Institute

OKLAHOMA CITY –  Twenty-five organizations were recently awarded Aerospace and Aviation Education Program grants or contracts totaling over $270,000 from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC). The record amount of funds will be used to expose more school-aged children in Oklahoma to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers, particularly those in aerospace and aviation.  The funding was approved by the Commission at their most recent meeting.

The Commission approved an education contract for The Oklahoman to produce a newspaper insert and workbook entitled "Soaring Oklahoma 2017: Aerospace and Defense." The insert and workbook would be used by students and teachers throughout the state and would include aerospace and aviation curriculum and careers information. Eight lesson plans would be published digitally and in The Oklahoman Newspaper, and delivered in classroom sets to registered teachers. The program would run from October through mid-December of 2017, and would reach approximately 191,000 students. The requested amount was $5,000 and the agency staff recommendation was $5,000.

“OAC has partnered with the Newspaper in Education Institute for several years through the aviation education grant program, and we look forward to seeing the program they create this year,” said Catherine Taber, aviation program manager and aviation education coordinator for the Commission.
